The fifth season of Smallville starts with its characters in college. Because Chloe was sent to the Arctic Circle and the Kryptonian enemies are back in town, Clark (Tom Welling) meets up with Jor-El (voiced by Terence Stamp) in the Fortress of Solitude. He surrenders his powers, for trying to get them back would mean death of someone he truly loves.

In this season, Clark and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) officially become a couple, despite the other people that seemed to separate them. Chloe (Allison Mack) tells Clark her biggest secret and becomes best friends with him. Lois (Erica Durance) gets to know Arthur “AC” Curry, an amazing swimmer, who is doubtful of Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) and LutherCorp. Milton Fine (James Marsters) asks for Clark’s aid on his project to expose LutherCorp. Lex is the controversial character of season five.
